  • 1987 - Astronomers at University of California see first sight of birth of a galaxy.
  • 1989 - Birth of Baby, lion-tailed macaques at Woodland Park Zoo (Seattle).
  • 1990 - New York Lotto pays US$35 million to one winner (numbers are 18-25-26-32-42-44).
  • 1992 - In Detroit, Michigan, the 1992 North American International Auto Show is held. Chevrolet debuts the Sting Ray III show car, a styling preview being considered for the next generation Corvette.
  • 1994 - Dow Jones Industrial Average hits record 3803.88.
  • 1994 - In Detroit, Michigan, ice skater Nancy Kerrigan is clubbed on the right leg by an assailant under orders from figure skating rival Tonya Harding's ex-husband.
  • 1997 - In Detroit, Michigan, the North American International Auto Show is held, over ten days. Chevrolet unveils the 1997 Corvette, dubbed "C5". A new small-block V-8 engine is introduced, the LS1, with 345-hp, and 10:1 compression ratio.
  • 2010 - At the 2010 Florida United Numismatists convention, Heritage Auctions conducts the Platinum Night auction. Some highlights:
    • USA 1913 5-cent, Liberty Head, Proof 64 NGC: US$3,737,500;
    • USA 1927-D $20, 13 known, MS-66 PCGS: $1,495,000;
    • USA 1921 $20, MS-64 PCGS: $322,000;
    • USA 1874 Dana Bickford $10 gold pattern, Proof 65 PCGS, one of two known: $1,265,000.

  • 2011 - (to January 8) Heritage Auction Galleries conducts its Heritage Auctions Signature Currency Auction at the Florida United Numismatists convention in Tampa, Florida. A Series 1861 US10 demand note, handwritten "for the", only one known, VG-8, sells for $109,250.
